China’s Skyscrapers Shower Cities With ‘Rooftop Rain’ Tech To Combat Extreme Heat

Major cities in China are implementing an innovative urban cooling strategy by transforming skyscrapers into giant artificial rain generators. This “rooftop rain” technology pumps harvested rainwater up to the summits of tall buildings and sprays a fine mist into the surrounding atmosphere. As the water droplets evaporate, they absorb local ambient heat, significantly lowering the ground-level temperature in crowded financial districts. This geoengineering initiative directly targets the urban heat island effect, which has grown increasingly dangerous during recent summer heatwaves. Early test results show that the misting systems can reduce local temperatures by up to three degrees Celsius while clearing smog. City planners hope to expand this infrastructure to hundreds of commercial high-rises to create sustainable, climate-resilient cities.
